Since 1946, the George C. Hoyt family has maintained independent ownership with emphasis on high quality merchandise at competitive prices, dependable customer service and free delivery within twenty-five miles of Lecompte. Founders George and Mary Hoyt operated the store for 58 years. Until 1993, Mary served as gift buyer and bookkeeper. When George died in 2003, he had been a retailer continually since 1934 when his father, John Lafayette Hoyt, built the first store from cypress of Bayou Boeuf to sell and repair radios near Cheneyville, LA. After World War II, George and Mary returned to Central Louisiana from Fort Benning, GA. With the help of Wade Jones, Sr. of the Bank of Lecompte, H&H Appliance Sales and Service in Lecompte was opened. Initially products included appliances, electronics, and electrical supplies. In the early 60’s the store was expanded to include furniture largely in response to custom orders needed by England Airbase personnel. Today, the Hoyt family continues the family tradition of quality products, service and dependability.
The Hoyt family tradition includes community involvement. George served as Mayor of Lecompte for 17 years from 1957 to 1974 and was a 50-year member of Rotary Club of Lecompte, having served in many capacities, including President. Mary served as President Lecompte Garden Club and Lecompte High School PTA. Daughter Joyce, who lived in Baton Rouge for 40 years, was recognized as Junior League Sustainer of the Year and Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Volunteer Activist for her work with Volunteers in Public Schools, Academic Distinction Fund, and Baton Rouge Mayor’s Town Meeting Committee. In Lecompte she was Rotary Club President 2008-09 and served as District 6190 Assistant Governor for 2 years. She is a member of Alexandria Rotary Club, Lecompte Garden Club, South Rapides Service Club, CENLA Chamber of Commerce, Professional Women’s Network and Junior League of Alexandria. Since 2015, Joyce has chaired Civic Involvement for the Lecompte Garden Club. With Lecompte Councilman Lonnell Clark and Mayor Robert L. Baxter they have guided Lecompte thru the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Cleanest City Contest. In 2017 and 2018, Lecompte was presented the Lt. Govornor’s Beautificaton Award. In July, 2018, the LA Garden Club Federation awarded Lecompte the Award for Most Improved in the State of LA.
H&H was awarded the Central Louisiana Chamber of Commerce Best Small Business Award at the 2017 BIZZY Awards.
